Description

The Hospital of Central Connecticut had determined the need to upgrade their surgical suites to incorporate the latest technology. NEMSI was awarded a $584,000 negotiated project to upgrade the nine surgical suites on the second floor in the Tomasso Tower. The work included the installation of three new Trumph Surgical Booms and all new auxiliary support equipment in each of nine different surgical operating rooms.  NEMSI designed and installed the entire electrical utility infrastructure required to support the proposed upgrade with input from the various manufacturers and the hospital. The project required performing the work invisibly so as to minimize the downtime of normal operations in the surgical suites. The project started in February of this year with our people working the second shift installing power and other required services within the sterile surgical suite corridors in preparation for the actual work within the operating rooms later on. Each night, this required suiting up, installing sterile plastic isolation barriers, performing new installation work and removing the barriers to make the suite ready for surgery the next day with all the existing services up and functional.

With the completion of the installation in September, 2011, the hospital is now able to use either of their two portable da Vinci Operating Carts to perform “state of the art” robotic surgery in either operating rooms 4 or 5. Our subcontract involved both our Electrical and Mechanical Groups to perform all the electrical power, data cabling, fiber optic conduit and medical gas piping required for both the new and modified existing services.
