Description

The new boardwalk constructed connecting Silver Sands State Park and the City of Milford’s Walnut Beach runs along Long Island Sound for .64 miles.  This unique project consists of just over 3,400 linear feet of recycled composite decking that ranges from 8 to 12 feet wide. The boardwalk has several beach accesses, ramps and nodes with benches for sitting.  This project was put on hold during the optimal summer building season in order to avoid disturbance of the nesting season of an endangered species of bird, the Piping Plover.  After construction was again declared safe to reconvene, the project approached the record-breaking snowfall over the winter of 2010-2011, but the project team was still able to complete the project to stringent quality control standards, on time, and on budget for the owner.  It is the first boardwalk of its length in the state of Connecticut, and is the longest boardwalk on Long Island Sound.
