Description
The unassuming Chapel of Saint Thomas More blends easily with the nearby Georgian residential colleges of Yale University on a quiet stretch of Park Street in New Haven. This 300 seat church was originally dedicated in October of 1938. Over the years, the harsh New England weather and normal aging process had taken their toll on the beautiful building. In anticipation of the Chapel's 70th anniversary, the Saint Thomas More Corporation set the wheels in motion to establish a budget, raise the necessary funds, select the right team, and bring the Chapel back to its original splendor. The project was originally in serious jeopardy, as it was well over budget. Substantial cost reduction solutions were developed, such as refitting the existing arched window sashes with insulated glass, and re-use of certain materials, including the balustrades from the original communion rail (discovered in the Chapel basement) which are now part of a prayer alcove. This special house of worship is now ready to serve the Yale community for decades to come.
