Award Description

In 2005, The Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) purchased approximately 4 acres of Greenfield property for the construction of a new branch library to serve the Northeast quadrant of the city of Ann Arbor. The AADL Traverwood Library is a benchmark project for the consideration of the suburban library and an integrated approach to sustainability.

- The intent to preserve the vision of a sylvan symbiosis and maintain the biodiversity of the natural environment was accomplished through
implementation of the following strategies:

- The building would tread lightly at the edge, respectful of cohabitation

- Promoting reflection and protection of the woods

- Attempt to dissolve the boundary between the built environment and the natural

Jury Comment: This project shows a great sensitivity towards the timeless
hallmarks of great design: space, materiality, lighting, form. The detailing is excellent; inventive design combined with rigorous execution.
