To patients arriving for analysis and treatment, the Hauenstein Center at Saint Mary’s means added convenience: with all outpatient and inpatient neuroscience services now together under one roof, a patient’s visit has become simpler in terms of logistics, scheduling, and physician collaboration. But to Paul Hansma, Allied Electric’s project manager during the construction process, the new healthcare facility meant something quite different as far as logistics, scheduling and collaboration were concerned. “They demolished a 50-year-old building and put the new facility in between a parking ramp and existing power plant, making it a very, very tight site,” Hansma recalls. With sidewalk-to-sidewalk construction, normally a challenge for cities considerably larger than Grand Rapids, “just about everything needs to be precisely scheduled because you’re not allowed much on-site storage,” Hansma explains.
In addition to the challenge of the tight squeeze, completion of the $60-million project required Allied Electric’s involvement in the installation of a 64-slice CT scanner and digital radiology equipment. Also benefiting from Allied’s expertise were the expanded emergency department, Level II trauma facility, and critical care unit. Construction of the Hauenstein Center, named for Grand Rapids businessman and philanthropist Ralph Hauenstein, involved cutting-edge Green technology as well.
