Union Square Condominiums - Grand Rapids

Descriptions

Pioneer Construction

This new property is the old Union High School, more recently known as West Middle School, and has undergone a swift and amazing transformation.  The Union Square property is historically significant to many people.  It was Grand Rapids’ main high school from 1875 to 1968 and this history will remain part of it’s charm.  Reminders will include the original double banister stairways, 12 to 21 foot ceilings, hardwood maple flooring, and 12-inch oak windowsills.  Genuine slate chalkboards, fire drill instructions, trophy cases, school furniture, and some of the old light fixtures will help reinforce the school motif throughout the public areas of the building, and even in some condominiums.

Kent Companies, Inc.

The Union Square building that is visibly seen from the crossroads of 131 and the Ford Freeway (1-96) in Grand Rapids was built in 1872 as Grand Rapids, Michigan’s primary high school until 1968.  In 2006, the school was renovated into condos some of which still have the old hardwood gymnasium floor as well as the old slate chalk boards and the large classic school clocks.  Kent Companies was contracted to install Maxxon's Gypcrete products to restore and level the exisitng floors.
