The J.W. Marriott has some of the most stunning architectural elements in West Michigan. Their design is bold and thoughtful, high quality design defined the entire project. Our job was fairly straightforward: We needed to install an audio system built for easy control and flexible input options. The idea was to be wired for sound, but not necessarily “hard-wired” for sound.
This project had one challenge that we didn’t anticipate. As we worked to stay on schedule, the scope changed. We needed to add a t-coil loop system. This system allows the sound signal to be broadcast directly into a hearing aid. The problem was, the floors had already been poured.
The difficulty came from the fact that a loop system puts out a very weak, non-disruptive signal. The ballroom, which is the largest hotel ballroom in West Michigan, features ceilings that were too high for our digitally processed amplified signals to reach the listener. The floor was poured and carpeted but with the high ceiling not a workable location, we went back to the floor utilizing an innovative process that embed the wire into the carpet. West Michigan is the most “looped” region of all the United States. We are very proud to be a part of maintaining this distinction.
Budget $330,000.
Supervision Gary Zandstra, Steve Driesenga, Jeff VandeHoef.
THE KING CO., INC.
THE KING CO., INC. provided design-build earth retention services for the Marriott Hotel. The temporary left-in-place earth retention was designed for excavation depths up to 26-feet from grade. A soldier pile timber lagging wall was selected as the earth retention system as it provided the Owner with an efficient, cost-effective solution to support the adjacent roadways and buildings. 550 linear feet of soldier pile timber lagging wall was installed with 95 grouted anchors with design capacities up to 75 tons. The work was completed with two piling crew utilized to meet the fast-track schedule.
Welch Tile & Marble
This luxury hotel has a distinct architectural design that graces the Grand Rapids skyline and provides guests with an experience like none other in the Midwest. Its 337 rooms and 660-space parking structure support events at such venues as DeVos Place and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The hotel created 250 new service industry jobs and the 110,000 sq. ft. convention center is projected to generate $15 to $20 million of revenue for the community annually. A study in efficiency, an average of 186 people worked 17 hours a day, seven days a week for 24 months. Shipments of materials were delivered at night to minimize disruption to nearby businesses and neighboring Amway Grand Plaza Hotel guests as well as reduce the need for road and lane closures. Amassing knowledge as they went, Rockford’s crew tightened the schedule by installing one floor every five days, finally reaching the 23rd story and helipad at a height of 256 feet. Budget $97,000,000. Supervision Mike VanGessel, Mike Gnewkowski.
