Sunny Fresh Foods, a subsidiary of Cargill, produces and distributes egg products for the food service industry. In order to meet the growing demands of the egg product industry, Sunny Fresh Foods made the decision to expand their facility in Lake Odessa, Michigan with a design/build process beginning in the Fall of 2005. Classic Engineering provided the structural design for this project.
Now known as Cargill Kitchen Solutions, the project included New Production, Process and Freezer Additions and Renovation, which more than doubled the existing 30 year old food processing factory. The additions of more than 86,000 sq. ft. encapsulate and upgrades the existing egg processing facility. Pre-cast Concrete and insulated metal panels transform the 1980's masonry block exterior into a monolithic state-of-the-art Food Processing Plant, to meet today's stringent standards. Project included:
- New Loading Docks
- New Warehouse
- New Cooked Process
- New Engine Room
- Extensive Site Upgrades
- New Employee Area
Driesenga & Associates, Inc. was brought in as part of the project team to complete an ALTA survey, provide geotechnical engineering and soils testing, civil engineering design, construction staking, and construction materials testing. The geotechnical engineering and soils testing component was critical to ensure that the structural engineer was aware of the soil characteristics on site prior to designing the building to handle the loads required with the building expansion. Through the civil engineering design process, Driesenga & Associates, Inc. coordinated with the Ionia County Drain Commission and Road Commission to meet their standards and requirements, while coordinating with the Village of Lake Odessa to coordinate their facilities expansions and updates to the local roadway. Challenges included determining an outlet for the storm water detention basins and designing a site with minimum cover over the storm sewer system. Through construction staking and materials testing, Driesenga & Associates, Inc. provided the services necessary through the completion of construction in the fall of 2006.
