Description
ElllisDon is the Construction Manager for the Energy, Environment, Experiential Learning building (EEEL) at the University of Calgary.
This building is a state-of-the-art facility to further compliment the progressive learning cultures being developed for the science and engineering faculties. The five-storey 250,000 square foot building embodies the theme of "Science on Display" and provides upgraded spaces for undergraduate laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms and individual study spaces for over 1,000 students. Many of the rooms will have the flexibility to transform into multi-discipline labs or hands-on learning environments which will focus on energy and environmental studies.
The building harvests natural light throughout, employs the latest mechanical and electrical ideas for energy savings and uses both interior and exterior products for sustainability to achieve LEED(r) Gold certification.
The entire area is pedestrian friendly, linked to public transportation services and to other campus buildings as part of the University's Master Plan.
The project features buried Earth Tubes for the use of air transfer into the building from the 100% fresh air intakes. Cast-in-place floor piping assists in the control and efficiency of heating and cooling loads, and an underground cistern collects rainwater for use in secondary water systems. The exterior features instruction landscape elements such as anticlines, interpretive features, and an esker.
