Description

EllisDon is the Construction Manager for the International Facilities Project - East Concourse at the Calgary International Airport. This project will provide The Calgary Airport Authority increased capacity to meet projected international and transborder demand through to 2025. Upon completion, the East Concourse will double the size of the existing terminal building. The expansion will add 22 bridge positions with capability for future expansion to a total of 29 bridge positions. It will be one of the largest projects in the history of Alberta.

The 146,000 sq. m. project consists of approximately 80,000 cu. m. of concrete and 8000 tonnes of structural steel. The curtainwall system is a mixture of double wall (active) and triple glazed systems. Additionally, there are 5,000m-squared of skylights, 660km of in-floor radiant heating tubes and 715 vertical geothermal wells (123m deep) as some project highlights. All of the excavated material from the building excavation will be reused on the adjacent Runway Development Project. The new baggage tub system consists of approximately 7km of conveyor with 2,500 motors and 8 scanning machines. The design group will be using Building Information Modeling for this project.

Some of the challenges of this project are working adjacent to the existing terminal and having the Runway Development Project surrounding the site on the other side being constructed at the same time.
