Description
The GO Oakville Parking Garage is a six-level, open-air parking structure, including 1,381 parking spaces, a total building area of approximately 52,114 square metres, and a car-counting system enabling customers to predetermine available parking spaces on each floor.
The open air structure features a kiss-and-ride on the lower floor, a tunnel passing beneath the tracks for platform access, glass front and back elevators for passive security, and architectural elevations sympathetic to the neighbouring residential community. The exterior facade of the building includes a curtainwall system at the elevator core, and the stair cores with textured architectural pre-cast detailing. The structure consists of cast-in-place elevator and stair cores, foundations and a slab-on-grade. The structural system consists largely of pre-cast concrete columns, shearwalls and pre-cast double tees for the parking decks.
The project has a large landscaped parkette to the south with an extensive bioswale included to manage and pre-treat storm water run-ff.
The project team is following LEED initiatives but, due to this being an open-air structure, cannot seek certification. The sustainable features in the design and construction include waste diversion; control flow drains on the roof; the aforementioned bioswale; oil-grit separators on both storm and sanitary connections; drought-resistant landscape; LED lighting; daylight harvesting and a white Thermoplastic single-ply (TPO) roof.
Additionally, the client is considering EllisDon's proposal to purchase a photovoltaic array to be mounted on the roof. The PV array will ultimately produce power, which will be fed back to the grid under the provincial feed-in-tariff (FIT) program.
