Architectural Glass & Metals, Inc.
The exterior building envelope of the Lemmen Holton Cancer Pavilion is inclusive of approximately 120,000 SF of custom engineered, vertically butt-glazed curtainwall, composite aluminum panel and insulated metal panel systems furnished and installed as a single-source contract by Architectural Glass & Metals, Inc. AGM worked closely with URS & The Christman Company throughout the design and construction phases of this project to help develop and refine several of the key details necessary to provide the integrated rainscreen building enclosure system envisioned by the design and ownership team. Two of the most significant challenges overcome during this project were designing and implementing a horizontal expansion joint within the field of the curtainwall system that maintained the architect's desired aesthetic. This needed to be accomplished while accommodating a larger than normal amount of movement at the cantilevered portion of the building and successfully managing AGM's labor force to address the overwhelming scale of the project. Multiple glazing and/or metal panel crews were committed to this project working extended hours for nearly 12 months as required to meet building enclosure and occupancy deadlines established by the construction team. Through strong leadership, tireless dedication and a cooperative spirit by all team members involved, Spectrum Health's newest LEED Certified medical facility opened its doors on time and on budget. Pioneer Construction
Total Cost: $1,200,000
Supervision: Doug Sparling, Project Manager
This challenging project, located on Michigan Hill, was erected by Pioneer Construction for the Christman Company. With careful planning and logistics control, 2,200 tons of steel was brought to the site and raised into place. With no room for staging, detailed sequencing plans were developed. The use of a 110 ton crawler crane and the tower crane made for an ease of construction. The geometry presented challenges as well. The radius (convex) Michigan Street elevation was extremely detailed with canilevers, rolled pourstop, and curtianwall supports. Another notable feature includes the 630 tons of 1” plate steel that was placed with magnetic rigging to cover the linear accelerator. This difficult erection project was executed and detailed in 4 months.
