Architectural Glass & Metals, Inc.

The exterior building envelope of the Blodgett Hospital Addition includes approximately 23,000 sf of custom fabricated aluminum curtainwall and insulated metal panels integrated into a single-source system furnished and installed by Architectural Glass and Metals, Inc.

East Muskegon Roofing and Sheet Metal Co., Inc.

  • East Muskegon Roofing and Sheet Metal was hired for the roofing portion of the project.  This project brought several challenges.  We worked on a very small site in a residential area with an extremely aggressive time frame and an extensive roofing system.

  • The roofing system starts by priming and installing a vapor barrier on the new concrete roof deck.  Then there are layers of insulation set in a foam adhesive.  The membrane layers are a multi-ply SBS system set in cold adhesive.  Finally there is a white coating applied.  This system qualifies for LEED credits.  This is a LEED certified facility.

  • We worked closely as a team with the construction manager, architect, owner, and other trades to ensure keeping with the establised schedule and all the proper safety precautions.

Exxel Engineering

Exxel Engineering, Inc. worked with three contractors to stake piling and column locations and elevations, to stake the floor locations and elevations of the building addition and continued to take weekely elevations to monitor elevations of those floors during the construction process and to stake concrete curbs and walks outside the building.

Feyen Zylstra, LLC

Winner of the 2004 ABC Award of Excellence in Low Voltage Category

Feyen Zylstra designed and installed the upgraded cabling infrastructure at the Blodgett Campus of the Spectrum Health system. The project team used 190 miles of Avaya Category 6 cable to connect over 5200 locations to the network. Extensive firestopping was installed to bring the campus up to code. The fiber backbone and inter-building connections were also replaced. Because the work needed to be done without any interruption to the hospital’s services, the project team worked during all shifts to have minimal impact.

Kent Companies, Inc.

Kent Companies was hired to provide a turnkey concrete package as part of this $100 million two-year project that included the addition of two patient towers and major interior renovations at Spectrum Health’s Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Working for the project construction manager, The Christman Company, Kent Companies utilized a wide variety of its resources and talents to complete this complicated and multi-faceted job ahead of schedule and under budget.

Due to poor soils, the project included heavy grade beams and pile caps as well as twelve- and sixteen-inch structural slabs on grade containing nearly 150 tons of resteel. The project also included over 1,200 lineal feet of tall foundation walls. Rising nearly 80-foot each, Kent Companies utilized custom designed and engineered formwork system to construct five elevator and stair cores.

For the elevated levels in the patient towers, a mix of cast-in-place concrete decks and structural steel was used. Kent Companies employed metal “pans” and hand-set shoring to form three levels of cast-in-place concrete decks. Lightweight concrete was used in over 100,000 square feet of slabs on metal deck. This project allowed Kent Companies to showcase its diverse concrete talents for a key owner and key construction manager.
