The CMU inverted rotunda is the compositional centerpiece to this facility. The material was chosen for its visual strength and dramatic texture. These characteristics, as a contrast to the smoother stained cement plaster finish elsewhere, allow the strong circular feature to be expressed as the core or "hearth" of the building with the radial plan connecting to the program components and beyond to the park. The masonry material, visible on the exterior and interior of the entry gallery, reinforces the design goal bringing the outside in and featuring the qualities of this material as both an honest structural element and a durable, versatile finish.
